Breast Augmentation FAQ’s

Breast augmentation in Austin is a process involving the use of breast implants to give you fuller breasts (breast enlargement). Breast augmentation surgery can restore the lost volume of your breasts after significant weight loss or pregnancy. Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries today because it allows women to reclaim their femininity.

What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?

Although the breast augmentation technique has been improved during the last few years, as with any surgery, it carries some risk.  Possible risks include bleeding, infection, blood clots or adverse reactions to anesthesia.  There is also a possibility of problems with the implants themselves.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Gorman will discuss at length the possible risk factors associated with the surgery.

What are the different types of implants that are used?

There are two main types of implants used in breast augmentation surgery which have been approved by the FDA.  Saline implants, which are approved for women 18 years of age and older, and silicone gel implants which are approved for women over the age of 22 years old.  Each type of implant comes in a variety of shapes and sizes including round or anatomically shaped and smooth or textured surfaces.

Which type of breast implant works the best?

During your initial consulation, Dr. Gorman will discuss with you the different options of implants available and based on your body and your desired outcome, will recommend the implant type that is best for you. During this time he will also suggest the best placement of your implant for your lifestyle, either above or below the chest muscle.

Is there any possibility of scarring?

There is no ‘scarless’ incision and the degree of scarring varies depending on individual skin type and other factors. In most cases, the scar resulting from the breast augmentation surgery will fade over the time.

Will I be able to breastfeed after the surgery?

Yes, in general, breast feeding is not affected by the breast augmenation surgery.  If you are planning on becoming pregnant after the surgery and would like to breast feed, discuss this with Dr. Gorman during your intial consultation.

How long does it take to recover?

Breasts have completed most of their healing at three months after surgery. However the recovery period varies from one person to other. Many patients are able to return to work after a few days of rest though some soreness may still remain. Strenuous activity should be avoided for six weeks after surgery at which time you may resume your full routine. Feel free to ask questions or notify your surgeon if your pain worsens during your recovery period.

Can I still continue having mammograms?

Yes, you can still continue having mammograms following the breast augmentation surgery. However, it is advisable to inform your technician while doing the mammogram that you have undergone breast augmentation surgery.
